Social media - You either love it or you hate it. Fact is, the majority of young people have a social media account on one or more platforms. Students need to understand that what they post or share online could come back to haunt them when they are trying to get into college or get a job. Everyone has their reasons for using or not using social media. As adults, we have a responsibility to stay up-to-date on social media so that we are aware of what students are seeing and posting. SMACtalk is a great resource for parents to use to learn about social media. Teachers across the nation use a non-profit organization, DonorsChoose, to get funding for projects and materials for their classes. History of DonorsChoose - In 2000, Charles Best, a teacher at a Bronx public high school, wanted his students to read Little House on the Prairie. As he was making photocopies of the one book he could procure, Charles thought about all the money he and his colleagues were spending on books, art supplies, and other materials. And he figured there were people out there who'd want to help — if they could see where their money was going. Charles sketched out a website where teachers could post classroom project requests, and donors could choose the ones they wanted to support. His colleagues posted the first 11 requests. Then it spread. Today, we're open to every public school in America. Mrs. Hopwood, MPS Speech Pathologist, has posted her project to the website. If you would like to assist her with her project, please follow this link: https://www.donorschoose.org/project/speak-up-and-be-heard-with-mrs-hopwood/5795775/?utm_source=dc&utm_medium=directlink&utm_campaign=teacherhub&utm_term=teacher_6520369&rf=directlink-dc-2021-09-teacherhub-teacher_6520369&challengeid=21411915 If you use the code LIFTOFF, the donation can be matched for the nex seven days. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Hopwood - amber.hopwood@mountainburg.org.
