Project Lead the Way

Project Lead The Way allows our students to engage in the study of science, technology, engineering, and math in ways that appeal to learners of all ages. PLTW promotes the use of critical thinking and creative problem-solving in collaborative student groups. As students engage in hands-on activities, they become creative, collaborative problem solvers ready to take on any challenge.

PLTW Launch addresses Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core State Standards for Math and English Language Arts, and other national and state standards.

In middle school, all students are given a chance to experience PLTW in their science classes and in their activity courses.

In our activity courses, we offer

DESIGN and MODELING: Students discover the design process and develop an understanding of the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives. They are then challenged and empowered to use and apply what they’ve learned throughout the unit of study.

COMPUTER SCIENCE for INNOVATORS and MAKERS: In this exploration of how computers work, students are encouraged to make analogies between the parts of the human body and parts that make up a computer.

APP CREATORS: This unit will expose students to computer science as a means of computationally analyzing and developing solutions to authentic problems through mobile app development, and will convey the positive impact of the application of computer science to other disciplines and to society.

In 5th and 6th-grade science courses we offer:

INFECTION DETECTION: Students explore the transmission of infection, agents of disease, and mechanisms the body uses to stay healthy. Through a simulation, they compare communicable and non-communicable diseases. They design and run an experiment related to limiting the spread of germs and apply results to propose appropriate prevention methods.

COMPUTER SCIENCE for INNOVATORS and MAKERS: In this exploration of how computers work, students are encouraged to make analogies between the parts of the human body and parts that make up a computer.

In 7th and 8th-grade science courses we offer

FLIGHT and SPACE: Students learn about the exciting world of aerospace through the Flight and Space (FS) unit. Students become engineers as they design, prototype, and test models to learn about the science of flight and what it takes to travel and live in space. They solve real-world aviation and space challenges and plan a mission to Mars.

MEDICAL DETECTIVES: Students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they collect and analyze medical data to diagnose disease. They solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs, measure and interpret vital signs, examine nervous system structure and function, investigate disease outbreaks, and explore how a breakdown within the human body can lead to dysfunction.
